NUNW in fraud claims

• VERUA KAVEZERITHE former acting secretary general of the National Union of Namibian Workers has accused the federation of forging his signature on a resignation form.

Alfred Angula claims his signature was forged on a medical aid termination form with the Renaissance Health Medical Aid Fund.

Besides accusing the federation of forging his signature, the former labour leader has also taken the union to the labour commission over his salary, which has not been paid since his suspension in 2013.

The medical aid termination form, which was seen by The Namibian, has signatures purported to be those of Angula and Job Muniaro and stems from 26 May 2015.Angula claims that he has not signed any document authorising the termination of his medical aid cover and thus assumed that his signature must have been forged by the NUNW secretary general Job Muniaro, since he signed all documents to service providers.

Angula also accused the federation of not paying his salary as stipulated in the letter written by then acting president of NUNW Connie Pandeni on 25 October 2013. The letter states that Angula would be on leave with full remuneration pending the outcome of his case.

Angula accuses the federation of failing to inform him of the termination of his employment through the appointment of new office bearers, in terms of the NUNW constitution.

Asked to comment on Angula’s allegations, Muniaro said: “I sign many documents on a daily basis and so I cannot remember having signed that specific one. I am also not prepared to comment on the allegations, unless I am shown the document in question.”

President of NUNW Ismael Kasuto could not be reached for comment.

Angula’s demand for payment from NUNW is not the first time the labour federation has been asked to pay fired employees and the union might be forced to pay Angula handsomely if he wins his case now with the labour commissioner.

Angula was given the boot a year after the NUNW sacked its former general secretary Evilastus Kaaronda, who ended up being paid over N$750 000 in salary and N$687 000 in leave days by NUNW in July last year.

Ironically, Angula was reportedly part of a group that wanted Kaaronda out of NUNW, a claim Angula denied.
