The next group of Namibians to be repatriated from South Africa are expected to arrive in the country on Friday, 17 July.
Immigration minister Lucia Iipumbu says the government will assist Namibians abroad whenever possible and appropriate.
“Currently, the Namibian team is in South Africa, specifically in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, conducting verification processes. The total number of citizens to be repatriated will be communicated once the verification process has been completed,” Iipumbu said on Monday.
She gave her remarks at an event to mark the arrival of the first group of 71 repatriated Namibians, who arrived on Sunday.
“Many of those who have returned found themselves in difficult circumstances in South Africa, including economic hardship and other vulnerabilities that made it necessary for the government to facilitate their safe return home,” Iipumbu said.
The minister said Namibians who travel abroad should comply with immigration laws and remain in contact with Namibian diplomatic missions.
“While many citizens travel abroad in pursuit of economic opportunities, it is important that they do so through lawful channels and with realistic expectations,” she said.
