Another Namibian winner is freelance journalist Shireen van Wyk, who is one of the first-place winners in the online category.

Smith won her first prize in the print category with the article ‘The Agony of Infertility’.

Smith said yesterday: “I am extremely excited and grateful that my work has been recognised by this prestigious foundation. Thank you to those who have always encouraged me.”

The Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards was held under the theme ”More Than a Mother’ in 2021.

The foundation says it aims to empower infertile women through access to information and education, and a change of mindsets.

The foundation has an annual campaign to support governments in defining policies to enhance access to regulated, safe and effective fertility care.

It defines interventions to break the stigma around infertile women and raises awareness about infertility prevention, management and male infertility.
