President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has extended Namibia’s sympathy to the people and government of Venezuela following earthquakes that have killed hundreds in the South American country.
The earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, killing at least 920 people and leaving parts of the capital, Caracas, devastated.
On Friday, another earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was detected off Venezuela’s northern coast, raising fears as recovery efforts continue.
“The people of Namibia stand with the people of Venezuela as you confront the immense challenge of rescue, recovery and reconstruction,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said in a message to Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodríguez.
Nandi-Ndaitwah also praised the courage of the Venezuelan people and emergency workers involved in rescue and relief efforts.
She said the tragedy is a reminder of the need for countries to support one another during times of hardship, and expressed confidence that Venezuela would recover and rebuild.
She also reaffirmed Namibia’s friendship and solidarity with Venezuela during the difficult period the country faces.
