With heavy clouds hanging over Namibia’s capital thousands of Namibians packed the Independence Stadium in Windhoek’s Olympia suburb to witness the passing of the torch from President Hifikepunye Pohamba to President Hage Geingob.
Several African heads of state attended the occasion.
Geingob received over 86% of the votes cast in November’s election.
Geingob was today inaugurated as Namibia’s third democratically elected president. In a relatively short speech he hailed Sam Nujoma as his mentor.
He started his inauguration address by quoting Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the Lord has made, we will be glad and rejoice in it.”
The crowds went quiet listening to Geingob as he energetically gives his first speech as Namibia’s commander-in-chief. He said Namibia is friend to all and an enemy of no one.
“Let us stand together in building this new Namibian house where no one will feel left out,” he said.
Geingob ended his relatively short address by saying, “forward ever, backward never!”
Geingob also thanked the people of Namibia for giving him a clear mandate.
