The Namibia Breweries Limited has made a third attempt at taking up space in the Kenyan beer market by signing a deal with Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL).

The agreement allows KWAL to be a distributor of Windhoek Beer, catering to consumers who want premium beer.

During a ceremony held last week, Windhoek Beer marketing manager Tasneem Klazen said there is high demand for premium beer in the Kenyan market.

“The beer market in Kenya is growing rapidly. With the rise of Kenya’s middle class and a more sophisticated consumer base, there is a clear demand for beers that offer superior taste, authenticity and craftsmanship,” said Klazen.

This is the third time Namibia Breweries is attempting to build a stronghold in the Kenyan market.

In 2010, the company entered into an agreement with East African Breweries Limited (EABL), which was later terminated in 2016.
Four years later, in 2020, the company appointed Kapari Limited as its distributor

KWAL is owned by Distell Group, a South African company.

On 2 April 2023, Distell was acquired by Heineken, which also owns Namibia Breweries.

Windhoek Beer will be competing against brands that have been around for some time, such as EABL and Keroche.

KWAL managing director Lina Githuka says Windhoek Beer speaks to the current growing need and preference of premium beer for Kenyans.

“Kenya’s beer lovers are becoming more discerning, and Windhoek’s commitment to quality aligns perfectly with this growing demand,” Githuka says.

The new agreement is part of KWAL’s ongoing expansion.

“At KWAL, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional beverages for every occasion, whether it’s beer, wine, spirits or ciders.

Windhoek Beer is a perfect addition, reinforcing our leadership in the market and providing Kenyan consumers with even more high-quality choices,” she adds.

KWAL commercial director Jonas Geeraerts echoes Githuka’s sentiments about a growing demand for premium beers in Kenya.

“There’s a noticeable shift in consumer preferences in Kenya, with a growing appreciation for authentic, high-quality beers. Windhoek Beer, with its rich heritage and superior craftsmanship, is poised to capture the attention of Kenyan beer enthusiasts,” says Geeraerts.
