NAMIBIA recorded their first victory in the football competition at the Fasu Games with a comfortable 4-1 win against Botswana on Tuesday.
The outcome was all but assured at halftime as Namibia went into the break 3-0 up and although Botswana tried hard to get back into the match, Namibia’s defence handled their attacks comfortably.Panduleni Nekundi scored a brace and Bryan Bantam one goal for Namibia, while the fourth was a Botswana own goal. Botswana’s goal was scored by Khumo Kofingwa.Namibia were much more clinical than in their first match on Monday that they lost 2-0 against Algeria and already took the lead on nine minutes when Nekundi chested down a cross from the right wing to volley the ball past Botswana’s keeper Kuti Kabelo into the net.Nekundi continued to torment Botswana’s defence, and Namibia increased their lead after he pressurised Botswana’s defence, leading to an own goal by Botswana defender Gogontle Marumo on 28 minutes.Botswana also had a few chances but Namibian keeper Lloyd Kazapua protected their lead with some fine saves.Just before halftime Nekundi made it 3-0 when he beat the offside trap and drew Kabelo off his line to put the ball into an empty net.Botswana pushed hard in the second half and finally opened their account when Khumo Kofingwa latched onto a through pass on 75m to score from close range.Namibia however had the final say and midfielder Bryan Bantam made it 4-1 when he tapped in a cross into the box with two minutes of the match remaining.The result means that Namibia now lead the log with three points, ahead of Algeria who also have three points but with an inferior goal difference.Algeria however have a game in hand and just need a draw in their final match against Botswana on Wednesday afternoon to win the football competition at the Fasu Games.BASKETBALLEgypt beat Namibia 85-70 before also defeating Zambia 86-74 to top the men’s section with six points.Zambia lost to Namibia 91-75 yesterday and remain second on five points,with Namibia third on four points.Namibia were set to play Egypt yesterday evening and victory for the hosts would book a final date at the Unam Gymnasium with Egypt today at 18h00.On Tuesday, Namibia beat Botswana 80-63 in the women’s section to take over top position from Mozambique. The two countries are due to battle out the final group game today at 09h00.The first and second team will contest the final match on Thursday at 16h00 at the Unam Gymnasium.CHESSResults in round two of the men’s section were as follows: Zimbabwe 1-1 Uganda; Egypt 0F-0F Algeria; and Namibia 1⁄2- 1⁄2 Botswana.Round three: Botswana 4-0 Zimbabwe; Algeria 4-0 Namibia; and Uganda 2F-0F Egypt.Botswana sit top of the rankings after round three with 11 1⁄2 points, followed by Algeria on nine and Uganda on three.
