The Namibian Richelieu Eagles beat Oman by six wickets in the opening Cricket World Cup League 2 match of their Scotland tour in Dundee today.

After being sent in to bat, Oman reached 233 for eight wickets off their 50 overs, but Namibia’s top-order batters, led by Jan Frylinck, all made solid contributions as they reached 234 for the loss of four wickets with 13 balls to spare.

In Oman’s innings, Namibia got an early breakthrough when Junior Kariata dismissed Kashyap Prajapati for 2, and when Ben Shikongo dismissed Pratik Athavale they were two down for 11.

Oman’s middle-order, however, recovered well with Aqib Ilyas scoring 39, Zeeshan Maqsood 51 from 99 balls, Khalid Kail 51 from 66 balls (6×4) and  Shoaib Khan a rapid 30 from 18 balls.

Ben Shikongo was Namibia’s best bowler, taking four wickets for 29 runs off 9 overs, while Kariata, Jack Brassell and Bernard Scholtz each took one wicket.

In reply, Namibia’s top order batters all made solid contributions as they hunted down the target.

Michael van Lingen (30 off 41 balls) and Lohan Louwrens (29 off 65) put on 51 for the first wicket, while Frylinck and Gerhard Erasmus put on 69 for the third wicket, before Erasmus was out for 36 off 46 balls (2×1,1×6).

Frylinck went on to score 73 off 81 balls, which included eight stylish fours, while JJ Smit added 44 not out off 37 balls, including successive sixes off the last two balls to take Namibia to a commanding victory.

Namibia’s next match is against Scotland at the same venue on Saturday.
