Nominees for the ninth annual Channel O Music Video Awards were announced at the weekend and once again Namibia has made the list.
Three of the biggest names in the Namibian music industry were nominated and will be flying the Namibian flag high at the prestigious awards show. This is the eighth nomination in nine years for Afro Pop duo Gal Level, who are once again nominated in the category Most Gifted Afro Pop video of the Year, for their song ‘Money’ which features Toniks. Kwaito artist The Dogg, who is who has been nominated four times in the past, will be vying for the Most Gifted Kwaito video of the Year award, with his his song ‘Tromentos’ featuring South African singer Bricks. In the same category, first time nominee, Ees will also have a chance at winning with his hit song ‘Ayoba’ which features South Africa’s mega kwaito star Mandoza. All the Namibian nominees express their excitement for being selected as nominees for the awards that will take place on November 17. ‘We did not expect to be nominated this year, but we are obviously happy as it come at the right time. This nomination can bring back life to Gal Level who are set to release their ‘Last Chapter’ album later this year,’ said Gal Level manager Sula Kyababa. Namibia’s Germany-based kwaito sensation Ees could not contain his excitement of being his nomination ‘So many years I had to watch other Namibian and South African artist get recognition for their videos and even voted heavy for them, and you know how much I love music videos, so it was a dream come true to see my own name in that nomination list on Friday night,’ he said. Mshasho manager Knowledge Ipinge said the awards have opened doors for The Dogg. ‘The song ‘Tromentos’ is a product of The Channel O Music Video Awards platform.’He also said The Dogg will be sharing a stage with Nigerian musician Flavour at the Ai !Gams Festival on Saturday where they’ll be kicking off ‘nomination activities’. Flavour has also been nominated. Channel O Music Video Awards is the only public-voted annual music video awards show broadcast around the continent that exclusively features African artists. Spread across 14 categories, this year’s Channel O Music Video Awards are a showcase of Original African music.
