NAGN donates artwork to Spanish embassy

• GLORIA LUTUTUTHE National Art Gallery of
Namibia (NAGN) recently donated an artwork by Namibian artist Frieda Lühl to the Spanish embassy.

Lühl’s artwork was produced under the Tulipamwe project. Tulipamwe, which means ‘we are together’, is a non-profit empowerment project under the auspices of the NAGN.

The objective of the project is to stimulate art awareness and skills development among Namibian and international artists.

The project recently hosted different workshops around the country including 27 professional artists.

Lühl, says she was inspired by Goabeb’s stunning setting during the training workshops.

“The fires and the sunsets were surreal, hence the inspiration for this artwork.”

The Tulipamwe project was initially started in 1994 and has had funding from different embassies from the onset.

The project came to a halt in 2004 due to a lack of funding. In 2015, the project was reintroduced with funding from the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture and the different embassies.

“The handover is a first of a set of a series of donations that will involve various partners that have supported the project since its inception,” said Alexander Lasky, public relations officer at the NAGN.

“Every participating artist then donated artworks to Tulipamwe which the NAGN then donated to the different partners as a token of appreciation. We have identified this specific artwork as a donation to the Spanish embassy because of the partnership we have with the embassy and also because Spanish artists always participate in our projects.”

Ambassador Concepción Figuerola Santos had the following to say on the donation of the artwork: “I am highly thankful and appreciative of the donation. Tulipamwe gives artists the opportunity to share ideas and knowledge.”

The artwork will be on display at the residence of the Spanish embassy in Windhoek.
