Minister of works and transport Veikko Nekundi says two pedestrian bridges along the Western Bypass in Windhoek will cost the government N$70 million, with construction expected to begin by November.
Responding to Affirmative Repositioning member of parliament George Kambala in the National Assembly last week, Nekundi said approved designs were in place, with contractors expected on site soon.
Kambala said workers at China Town were arriving late because they have to use alternative routes, putting their jobs at risk.
Nekundi defended the speed humps installed along the road, saying some were more than 30 years old and predated several sitting members of parliament.
“Therefore, it is not an issue of Nekundi, but it is ascribed in the laws of the country passed by the very same August House,” he said.
He said pedestrians were regularly involved in accidents before the humps were installed, which has since stopped.
“We now experience zero crashes involving pedestrians,” he said.
Nekundi said additional bridges, including three to four towards the Windhoek Country Club Resort, would be considered in the next financial year.
