The National Democratic Party (NDP) has fired three top structure leaders following their dictatorship accusations against the party’s president, Martin Lukato.
The fired members are secretary general Alex Linyando, regional coordinator Allen Mwilima and presidential affairs manager Obrien Lisulo.
It is alleged that these members publicly accused Lukato of running the party like a one-man operation with his family, using party funds as he pleases, as well as creating a hostile environment for party members who are not in agreement with him until they quit.
NDP deputy president David Mwilima, during a press conference on Monday, said these accusations are false, describing them as intended to tarnish Lukato and the party’s name.
He added that the party strives to push unity. Thus they cannot have these members who let envy, jealousy and personal ambitions overshadow the spirit of unity within the party.
“These allegations are regrettable, misleading and are clearly intended to tarnish the
reputation of the president and the good name of the NDP. As a result, the party has taken a resolution to dismiss the offenders. Brave Alex Linyando, brave Allen Mwilma and brave Obrien Lisulo are officially fired from the NDP, effective immediately, and with duties revoked,” he said.
Mwilima added that the party is focused on strengthening its structures, serving the people of Namibia and consolidating its presence in parliament.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals have chosen to pursue personal agendas through public attacks rather than constructive internal dialogue. The leadership of the NDP categorically rejects these accusations. The party remains committed to democratic principles, collective leadership, transparency and accountability. Every significant decision taken by the leadership has been guided by the party constitution, national interest and the objective of building a stronger political movement capable of offering Namibians a credible alternative,” he said.
He added that NDP securing a seat in the National Assembly is a historic achievement. However, they are a young parliamentary party that is still building its organisational structures.
“Institution-building is a gradual process that requires patience, dedication and cooperation from all members. It is unfair and misleading for anyone to suggest that ongoing organisational development is evidence of dictatorship or the absence of democracy. Rather, it reflects the realities faced by any growing political organisation that is laying a solid foundation for long-term success,” he said.
Fired secretary general Alex Linyando told The Namibian on Tuesday that they are shocked to hear that they are fired because the three of them did not receive any letters.
He added that Lukato and Mwilima have no power to fire them as per the party constitution without any hearing.
“I was elected by the party members just like Lukato was elected by the people. The dismissal committee did not call us for a hearing for anything. We don’t have an expulsion letter; it just shows the blatant abuse of power by Lukato. This decision to fire us was taken by Lukato and Mwilima without the approval of the national executive committee. I am going to challenge them,” he said.
