ABOUT 100 placard-waving Khorixas residents on Monday demanded the suspension of town council officials who have been charged with corruption.
Khorixas municipality human resource head Eben Xoagub, head of housing Daniel Geiseb and CEO Nicodemus #Gaeseb were arrested last year for alleged fraud following an Anti-Corruption Commission investigation.The three are out on bail of N$30 000.The demonstration gathered at Eddie Bowe Soccer Field in front of the Khorixas Town Council offices and chanted slogans calling for the removal of the three officials.They also demanded the reconnection of water supply that was disconnected over unpaid bills and that a new debtors’ system be implemented within 60 days.The demonstrators, who presented a petition for the attention of the Khorixas mayor, Tryphosa Moloto, said they would camp at the council offices until their demands were met.The residents were also angry about the lack of development in Khorixas as there is only one supermarket, which is very expensive. The residents also wanted to know what has happened with the rehabilitation of boreholes at Khorixas and when the Donkerhoek informal settlement residents who were relocated on the order by the Khorixas council will be compensated. According to Mistake !Hoaeb of the Khorixas Huidere Development Committee, the demonstration was to protest against water disconnections.’Khorixas residents are punished with the closure of water if there is an existing housing debt. Water is a basic human right and just because someone has a housing debt the council closes it,’ he told The Namibian.!Hoaeb and demonstrators visited the home of 75-year-old Lukas /Howoseb whose water supply has been cut off because of an outstanding N$50 debt years ago./Howoseb said: ‘I was born 75 years ago in this town but I feel like a foreigner because of the way Khorixas council treats me.’’Just because of N$50 outstanding debt my water is closed. I have lived in this house for 40 years but it still does not belong to me,’ an emotional /Howoseb said.’I want to see the minister of housing so my house can be transferred in my name as I have lived in it for 40 years,’ said /Howoseb.Some demonstrators were in tears as /Howoseb spoke of his situation.
