‘Katutura’ finally hits our screens

After much anticipation, promotion and a seemingly endless social media marketing drive, Namibia Theatre and Film Award winner (NTFA), director Florian Schott’s ‘Katutura’ is finally set to hit local cinemas.

The feature film tells the story of Katutura, dealing with the struggle of everyday life in the township. Expect crime, drug abuse, violence but also the sense and strength of community and the bustling creativity to be found in Katutura, which roughly translated, means ‘the place where we do not belong’.

The film stars Chops Tshoopara who plays Dangi, Obed Emvula as Shivago, Gift Uzera as Kondja, Tjuna Kauapirura as Foibe and Odile Muller who stars as Esmé –

a group of characters experiencing the gravity of living in a township.

Ex-convict Dangi has to deal with living a law-abiding life, an extramarital son and an old flame who his wife doesn’t know about. Gangster Shivago, who explores a new market to sell his drugs; and Kondja, a teenager in a wheelchair who helps street kids, fall in love. Their paths intertwine and their lives collide in both hopeful and brutal ways.

With a special appearance by the main cast, ‘Katutura’ will be screened on Thursday, 29 January. The red carpet will start at 18h00 and the film screens at 20h00 at the Ster Kinekor Cinemas at the Grove Mall in Kleine Kuppe. Tickets cost N$200, available through Computicket. An additional screening takes place on Friday, 30 January at 20h00. Tickets for this screening cost N$100.
