Johnny Doëseb to quit Namibia Premier League

JOHNNY Doëseb has indicated that he is unlikely to stay on as Namibia Premier League chairman beyond his current term.
The man who has recently developed a penchant for off-road motor racing said he was keen on a challenge of a different kind.

‘My term is coming to an end. I still have one year left. I must look at other avenues where I can add value because there might be some youth out there that can come in and add value,’ Doëseb said in an interview with Namibia Sport on Tuesday.
Doëseb was re-elected unopposed for a second term in 2010 after challenger Sydney Martin withdrew just before the election.
Doëseb had originally taken over as interim chairman in May 2009, before being appointed on a full time basis a few months later.
‘I don’t want to overstay and lose focus. I can only do good now and try and be what I can to the league and add value to the product that I’m currently serving and I will do that until the end of my term,’ he said.
Doëseb believes this season presents another opportunity to better the NPL brand. For this to happen, there needs to be a substantial increase of role players in domestic football, he said.
This is in line with the sentiments of chief sponsor MTC, which said ‘the NPL needs at least three times more than they are receiving’ in order to improve its operations.
On Tuesday, MTC announced an improved sponsorship of N$11 294 300 for the new league season which kicks off this weekend.
‘My expectation is for the Namibian football fraternity to come on board and get involved in things of common interest so that we can build a brand of football in the entire country. Only through collectiveness can we unlock the true value of football in this country,’ Doëseb said.
He added that the new introduced competitions are aimed at exciting supporters and encouraging more competitive football.
‘Through innovativeness we can bring more supporters to the stadiums. I hope teams can also do more and go out there and aggressive market the game and excite supporters.’
