Birds of a feather flock together. Or even better – if you’ve got a Beemer, you’ve pretty much met the requirements for the newly-established BMW Club in Windhoek. Started by Onesmus Amadhila and Cornelius Nepulilo for the love of all things ‘Be My Wife’, it was about time someone challenged the exclusive Jeep lovers crew.
“We had a mutual love for the Beemer so we decided, why not start a club where we connect with lovers of the car?” Nepulilo told Top Revs. Although it’s fun discussing the nitty gritty details of the mechanical giant, it’s just as fun coming together and engaging in activities for the greater good. “We also do charity work as well as celebrating the brand,” Nepulilo said.
As new as the club is, they have already gone to underprivileged communities and made a difference where they could. “We do fun runs aimed at collecting items to donate to old age homes and orphanages. We have a hand-over in Okahandja on our next run by collecting clothes and blankets since winter is almost here,” Nepulilo said.
Oh, and the club already has 110 members – and counting – each with a heart of gold. “The aim is to connect all BMW lovers and enthusiasts and use this initiative to make a difference in our community as well as socialising with our peers.” Talk about street dreams!
Already, the club has established a BMW Club Drive as well as ‘Drive of the Year’ where enthusiasts gather and share their love for the Beemer. “We are very active,” Nepulilo said. “We have activities almost every other weekend and our cars come in all shapes and sizes. Our club wants to help the less fortunate for a better Namibia.”
BMW AG originated with three other manufacturing companies, Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFw) in Bavaria, and Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach in Thuringia. The company is now known as BMW or Bayerische Motoren Werke.
The engine manufacturer, which built proprietary industrial engines after World War I, was then bought by the owner of BFw who then merged BFw into BMW and moved the engine works onto BFw’s premises. BFw’s motorcycle sideline was improved upon by BMW and became an integral part of their business.
BMW then became an automobile manufacturer in 1929, and the rest, as they say, is history.
