Ex-Onandjokwe nurse says fraudulent Sanlam payout bought his mother Christmas food

Former Onandjokwe Intermediate Hospital nurse Festus Amwaalwa told the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday that part of the money he allegedly received from a fraudulent Sanlam insurance claim was used to buy his mother Christmas food.

Amwaalwa said this during his bail hearing, where he is facing charges linked to an alleged fraudulent insurance claim involving approximately N$1.3 million belonging to Klaudia Martin.

According to Amwaalwa, he received N$35 000 as a token of appreciation from the payout.

He further told the court that N$100 000 was deposited into the bank account of his sister, Foibe Markus.

“I used the money to repair my broken car, bought clothes for my four children, bought my mother Christmas food, and ploughed mahangu fields at my village, Oneputa, as well as my own field in the Okankolo constituency. I also bought fencing materials for my field,” he testified.

Amwaalwa also claimed that part of the money was distributed to other individuals, including intern doctor Kelsey Kudumo, who allegedly received N$20 000, Ottilie Johannes, who reportedly received N$40 000, and Hela Mpinge, who allegedly received N$5 000.

He further testified that the N$100 000 deposited into his sister’s account was allegedly transferred by Mpinge.

Mpinge, a cleaner at Onandjokwe Hospital, has also been linked to Abner Mateus, who is accused of masterminding the attack on and shooting of Ondangwa control prosecutor Justine Shiweda in October last year, who subsequently died.

The bail hearing continues on Tuesday.
