The government of India recently dispatched humanitarian assistance comprising of 1 000 metric tonnes of rice and 1 000 tonnes of maize to Namibia in response to the severe drought.

This was announced by Rahul Shrivastava, the new high commissioner of India to Namibia, during the national day reception of the Republic of India in Windhoek on Friday.

According to Shrivastava, the relationship between India and Namibia, founded on
solidarity, shared concerns, and mutual support, has gained renewed momentum over the past year through high-level engagements and bilateral initiatives.

“India has consistently been at the vanguard of support for Namibia, both prior to and following its independence,” he said.

He said this year marks the 75th anniversary of India’s Republic Day, a significant milestone commemorating the adoption of the constitution
of the country.

“Over the course of these 75 years, India has largely fulfilled the commitments we enshrined in our constitution, which aspires to secure justice, liberty and equality for all citizens.

“In addition to fostering the advancement and prosperity of our nation, this framework has reinforced the unity and integrity of our country. We have achieved this within a democratic paradigm, drawing upon the pluralistic and consultative fabric of our society,” he said.

Speaking during the commemoration,
deputy minister of international relations and cooperation Jenelly Matundu said Namibia considers India a strategic bilateral partner.

“Namibia considers India as a strategic bilateral partner, owing to the key role India played before and after our independence. Both sides have shown significant commitment to expand cooperation in various areas, and as a result our bilateral relations have since grown in depth and strength, buttressed by mutual trust, solidarity, and true South-South cooperation.

“In recent years, we have witnessed some significant milestones in the development of this truly remarkable relationship. Testament to this, is the numerous high-level visits that have taken place in the recent past years,” she said.
