Hübschle leaves RDP, rejoins Swapo

FORMER Rally for Democracy and Progress secretary for international relations Michaela Hübschle rejoined the ruling Swapo party on Monday.

She was received by Swapo secretary general Nangolo Mbumba at the party’s head office in Windhoek. She resigned from the RDP last week.

Sources close to the matter told Nampa that Hübschle, in her resignation letter submitted to RDP director of administration Asser Sheuyange, said she will still be critical to the party.

A statement issued by Hübschle on Monday said there are times in life when “one has to swallow your pride and do what is right”.

“Ten years ago, Hidipo Hamutenya, Jesaya Nyamu, I and others decided to leave Swapo due to what we perceived as undemocratic practices in the party,” she said.

Their vision then was to have a strong alternative to the ruling party for the sake of democracy in Namibia, hence the RDP was established.

“We had dreams. We realised some of them, others not. But more importantly under the leadership of president Hage Geingob, our party, Swapo, was returned to its former glory,” Hübschle said, adding that there is no longer any reason for them to remain outside their “political home”.

She noted that her legacy is in Swapo, and it is where she cut her ‘political teeth’ and made her contributions.

“Having been a dedicated member of the Swapo family for several decades, I am still feeling too passionate to quit politics for good. Coming home is only the right thing for me to do,” she said.

As a Swapo member, Hübschle was part of the Constituent Assembly and served in the National Assembly, as well as deputy minister of prisons and correctional services from 1990 to 2000.
