THE government has plans to set up an industrial school for homeless children.
This was said by the executive director of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Wilhencia Uiras, on Wednesday. Uiras did not give a specific timeline for when the school would be set up.
She said land at Witvlei in the Omaheke region had been allocated to her ministry recently, and the land was inspected last week to see what could be built on it.
Uiras was speaking in Windhoek at the launch of the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report for 2019.
She said the government did not necessarily want to set up a juvenile centre on the farmland outside Witvlei that had been allocated to it, but instead was hoping to set up an industrial school to provide basic skills to children who had dropped out of school for some reason or never had formal education.
“As a ministry we have developed a strategy aimed at helping these children and it is important to note that when it comes to social issues, efforts should be acknowledged and as a ministry we put in so much efforts and continue to do so,” Uiras said.
