Government unveils official mourning portrait for Nujoma

The government has unveiled the official mourning portrait for the late founding president, Sam Nujoma, who died over the weekend.

The executive director of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Audrin Mathe, said on Thursday the government will make the portrait available at public offices, including regional councils, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Office of the Judiciary, parliament and the founding president’s residence.

“Individuals are encouraged to have their own books of condolences at the offices where they operate from. For instance, schools are allowed to have books open at their own premises, and so is the private sector.”

Mathe said the government will request that books of condolences be handed over to the state at the end of the mourning period, so they can be preserved in the national archive.

He added that the photo of the late founding president would be available for free, although people will cover their own printing costs. Members of the public are encouraged to attach a black ribbon to the left side of the portrait and display it with their condolence book.

Additionally, Mathe said that those who wish to pay their respects at the Nujoma residence may do so from 14h00 to 16h00, Monday to Friday.

He said the weekend is reserved for the family to rest.

Mathe cautioned the public against making donations for funeral arrangements, responding to a list circulating on social media including prominent business figures and companies alleged to have made donations amounting to millions.

“That list is fake. Please be aware that during this difficult period of time, there will be those who will be wanting to take corners.

“The state is taking charge of the arrangements for the state funeral. Although we encourage the private sector individuals to contribute in any way, it will not be contributed via circulation on social media,” Mathe warned.
