ARNOLD KEYAIF there is one thing I liked while reviewing the Haval H1 it’s the thoughtfulness and styling that went into its design.
If anyone had doubts about any of Great Wall Motors’ vehicles’ dependability, Haval has blown that myth out of the water.
GWM has adapted well to the Asian philosophy of creating reasonably priced, yet functional vehicles.
The Haval H1 is no exception.
The sturdy and compact SUV embodies value for money in the crossover segment.
Haval has put all the essential bells and whistles onto one standard derivative.
The H1 comes with a 1,5 inline four-VVT petrol engine that is slightly wanting in the power department, churning out 69 kW at 600 rpm, and 130 Nm torque at 4 000 revs.
The five-speed front-wheel transmission is only available in manual mode.
The 16-inch alloy wheels on a well-adjusted Macpherson strut suspension keep the car stable and provide decent ground clearance to comfortably drive up a curb if needed.
The exterior is quite appealing, with protective plastic cladding and trims all around the vehicle.
This gives the car a semi-rugged look, complementing the front grille’s chrome accents.
The car features adjustable headlamps, front and rear fog lights, roof rails, a heated rear window, and the rear bumper has chrome tailpipes completing the stocky look.
The vehicle comes with a full spare tyre under a hidden boot compartment, which has just enough space for your groceries.
In case additional space is needed, the rear seats fold down.
Haval also has not neglected safety, featuring dual SRS front airbags, ABS with electronic brake-force distribution, disc brakes all round, Isofix child-seat mountings, adjustable front safety belts, safety sidebars, rear-door child locks, rear-park assist, remote central locking, alarm, immobiliser, door-ajar and lights-on warning.
The interior sports a leather-wrapped steering wheel with pone controls, audio entertainment unit controls, and cruise control, plus power steering and rake/reach height adjustment.
The sound system is brilliant on the eight-inch entertainment unit, with radio, Mp3 player, CD playback, Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary ports, and Android connectivity.
The H1 comes in four colours: titanium white, sky silver, jazz red and fashionable orange.
A five-year 100 000 km warranty tops it all off, with a three-years 45 000 km service plan, and five years’ roadside assistance.
The Haval H1 retails for N$205 500 and is available at Pupkewitz Haval.
