A 44-year-old police officer attached to the Very Important Persons Protection (VIPP) Division at Outapi has been arrested after allegedly hitting a pedestrian while driving along the Outapi-Tsandi main road on Sunday evening.
Omusati police regional commander commissioner Ismael Basson said the incident occurred at about 18h10 at Outapi.
“The suspect was driving a pickup on a public road recklessly and negligently when he allegedly hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road. He was also driving the motor vehicle without a driver’s licence and refused to provide a blood specimen when requested to do so by a traffic officer,” Basson reported.
The pedestrian is a 66-year-old woman from Ohauhwe, a village in the Outapi constituency. She sustained slight injuries to her face.
The suspect is facing charges of reckless or negligent driving, driving a motor vehicle without a driving licence and refusing to provide a blood specimen.
A police investigation is continuing.
