Germany gives N$103 million to green industrialisation projects

Germany and Namibia have signed an agreement to start working on two energy transition and industrialisation projects worth N$103 million.

The projects were agreed to in 2025 at bilateral negotiations on development cooperation held at Lüderitz.

“The projects will support Namibia’s efforts to expand access to modern and sustainable energy services and to develop responsible and sustainable value chains for critical raw materials, contributing to the country’s energy transition and green industrialisation objectives,” a joint media release states.

Newly accredited German ambassador Thomas Wimmer and National Planning Commission director general Kaire Mbuende signed the cooperation agreement on Wednesday.

One project focuses on expanding access to electricity while the other is a critical raw materials project.

“[The project] will strengthen sustainable critical raw material value chains, with a focus on local value addition, transparency and economic opportunities arising from the global energy transition,” the statement reads.

This comes as European governments expand into critical mineral projects in Namibia through Global Gateway, the European Union’s strategy for investing in infrastructure and energy.

According to the German embassy, German entities are currently working on 50 projects in Namibia, including projects on sustainable energy, vocational training, urban development and natural resource management.
