Experiencing Nakambale’s glam camping lodge

Those travelling to Nakambale Museum can escape the northern Namibian sun by setting at Nakambale Travel Lodge.

Located between Ondangwa and Omuthiya in the Oshana region, the lodge provides tent canopy accommodations with an Owambo historical museum.

Lodge manager Maggie Kaanante says it is the only establishment of its kind in northern Namibia that displays the earliest documented Owambo historical artefacts.

“Our lodge is very special here, this is the only lodge here in the north that looks like this and show you our past and where we come from,” she says.

The museum that was converted from a mud-brick church building blends with the lodge’s modern camping style and outdoor dining facilities.

It was opened by Ondonga chief Immanuel Elifas in 1995. The inside has photographs detailing various pieces of clothing made from leather hides, copper armbands and jewelery made from ostrich eggs and line glass cardboards.

The museum also showcases the influence of the first Finnish settlers in northern Namibia on the Owambo culture.

Glass cabinets with dolls show the various ways young girls dressed before Olukuko in comparison to how young girls dress now.

Finnish missionaries also brought cutlery and dishes to Namibia which are shown in the museum.

The tents feature an air conditioner, indoor shower facilities and a pool section in what Kaanante calls a glam camping experience.
