Names of prosecutor general hopefuls revealed

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has released the names of six candidates who have applied for the position of prosecutor general.

The successful candidate will take over acting prosecutor general Martha Imalwa’s position.

Imalwa has held the position since 2004.

In December last year, the JSC extended Imalwa’s contract by an additional year, allowing her to remain in position on an acting basis until December this year.

The commission says it is finalising the recruitment process after applications closed on 31 July.

This comes after the JSC in June had to restart the process after none of the eight shortlisted candidates met the required standard in a written assessment.

Judiciary spokesperson Viktoria Hango says the applicants are Taswald July, Lucious Matota, Marthino Olivier, Salomo Kanyemba, Ileni Gebhardt and Tangeni Iitula.

Hango says the commission has introduced a two-stage selection process to identify the most suitable candidate for the position.

“The commission adopted a two-stage selection process, comprising a written assessment followed by a public interview conducted by the members of the commission,” she said on Friday.

She said only candidates who achieve the required score in the written assessment will qualify for the public interviews.

Hango said the process is aimed at ensuring that the appointment is based on merit and that all candidates are treated fairly.
