THE European Commission will partly fund a new sewage project for Luderitz, head of the National Planning Commission (NPC), Immanuel Ngatjizeko, said last week.
Ngatjizeko said the fast pace of Namibian urbanisation had resulted in many urban residents living without access to adequate water and sanitation facilities. “Unfortunately the establishment, operation and maintenance of a sewerage system is expensive and frequently not financially viable.Up to now, some municipalities operate the bucket collection system,” he said.The sewage system for Luderitz will be jointly financed by the European Commission, the Namibian Government, Luderitz Town Council and Luderitz’s partner town in Europe, Halle.Total cost for the project is N$47 638 516, Ngatjizeko said.Of this N$29 750 000 will come from the EU, N$10 770 971 from Ministry of Regional and Local Government and Housing, N$3 816 322 from Luderitz Town Council and the remaining N$1 976 250 from Halle’s Water Works Enterprise.The EC committed a further N$1 424 974 for study design and tenders for the project, he said.The work to be paid for will include construction of sewer pipelines, reticulation systems, increasing capacity at two existing pump stations, reconstruction of rising mains, a new water waste treatment plant, water reticulation plant, technical assistance, capacity building in Luderitz and the operation and maintenance of the new treatment and reticulation plant for the first year after completion.”Unfortunately the establishment, operation and maintenance of a sewerage system is expensive and frequently not financially viable.
