Electricity still a dream for rural Ohangwena

OHANGWENA governor Walde Ndevashiya says the region is set to benefit from NamPower’s rural electrification projects worth N$14 million.

Many areas in the northern regions of the country remain the least electrified, and many communities and schools have been without power since independence.

In rural communities the situation is worse as only a few have access to electricity.

“These projects involve the construction of medium- and low-voltage networks in different areas in the region, including the construction of 50km of medium-voltage (33kV) overhead lines, the installation of 11 medium- to low-voltage transformers, low-voltage distribution systems, outside lighting, as well as the wiring of school buildings,” Ndevashiya said last week.

He said the construction of medium- and low-voltage networks to provide electricity to Oshali shaKanhalelo at Endola to the tune of N$1,6 million is almost completed, while the construction of medium- and low-voltage networks to provide Onaisaati at Eenhana with electricity amounting to N$2 million, is also at an advanced stage.

“The construction of medium- and low-voltage networks to provide electricity to Loide Nadunya Primary School, Hafyenanye Primary School, and Omishe Primary School in the Epembe constituency has been successfully completed at an amount of N$3,5 million.

“In addition, Oshalumbu, Eengete and Omipapa in the Okongo constituency have been fully electrified at a cost of N$4,5 million, whereas the construction of medium- and low-voltage networks to supply Okanghalulwena, Onghalulu, Okakango, and Omauni in the Okongo constituency with electricity to the amount of N$9 million is almost completed,” he said.

Ndevashiya said these projects would provide public institutions in the areas, such as schools and clinics, with electricity.

In the Oshikoto region, the regional leadership, in partnership with the private sector and local community, is said to have prioritised the provision of electricity infrastructure.

The regional council will spend about N$2 million on the provision of electrical services at Onayena extension 1 at the Onayena settlement, while an amount of N$1 million will be used to supply the Oshivelo settlement with electricity and sewerage services.
