THE Electoral Commission of Namibia has approved the DTA of Namibia’s change of name to the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM).
In a media statement issued on Wednesday, chief electoral officer Paul Isaak said the name change and the new logo will be published through a notice in the Government Gazette.
A registered political party may lodge within 30 days from the date of publication of the notice an objection to the commission to any particulars contained therein.
Isaak said when an objection is lodged, the commission must within 14 days of the receipt thereof make a determination thereon, and serve a notice thereof on the registered political party whose particulars have changed and against whom the objection has been lodged, as well as the registered political party which lodged the objection.
The official opposition party was rebranded and renamed earlier this month as part of its transformation process.
The ECN approval comes in the wake of National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) presidential spokesperson, Joseph Kauandenge last week accusing PDM of stealing his party’s name.
Before forming a coalition with Nudo ahead of the 2014 Presidential and National Assembly elections, Kauandenge was the president of the People’s Democratic Movement, also known as the PDM.
