Diamond heist: Namdia cooperating with officials, police intensify investigations

Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) says it is cooperating with the police after a robbery at the company’s premises in Windhoek on Saturday.

Namdia says it is committed to the safety of its staff members, as well as the diamonds at its disposal.

“It is with deep sadness that we confirm an attempted armed robbery at our premises
earlier today [Saturday], which tragically resulted in the loss of one of our valued staff members.

“We are cooperating fully with law enforcement, and a thorough investigation is currently underway.

“As this is an ongoing investigation, we are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the facts
surrounding the incident.”

A full statement will be issued once more information becomes available, company spokesperson Beverly Coussement on behalf of chief executive Alisa Amupolo says.

OFFICER DIES
Meanwhile, the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) on Sunday reported that the police have revealed the identity of the man who was shot at Namdia as protection officer Francois Eiseb (57).

Eiseb was found dead with his hands and legs tied up in a storeroom, his face covered with a shopping bag, and with a gunshot wound to the head.

According to the state broadcaster, a suspect in the diamond heist was also found with gunshot wounds.

Sources from the Windhoek Fire Brigade say the wounds are self-inflicted.

The unidentified suspect succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

NBC reports that four armed suspects allegedly entered Namdia’s premises by means yet to be determined.

They allegedly held employees hostage by pointing firearms at them.

The suspects then managed to tie up staff members and steal an undisclosed number of diamonds.

NBC further reports that the police recovered four firearms and knives from the scene.

One suspect has been arrested.

The police believe more than two suspects are involved and are therefore requesting anyone with information to contact chief inspector Olivier at +264 81 421 0903, or chief inspector Simeon Nghilalulwa at 081 256 0988. – Additional information, NBC
