The Namibian police have seized 43 firearms this year, while international police cooperation has led to the arrest and extradition of fugitives and the recovery of stolen vehicles.
This was revealed by national police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, who says the firearm seizures form part of the police’s ongoing efforts to combat crime and strengthen public safety.
She says two people who were placed on the International Criminal Police Organisation
(Interpol) red notice wanted list were arrested between 2024 and 2026 and subsequently extradited to Namibia from abroad.
The red notice system is used by Interpol to seek the location and provisional arrest of individuals wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence.
Shikwambi also says four victims of human trafficking were rescued between 2024 and 2026 through international police cooperation.
In addition, 12 vehicles that had been stolen and smuggled across Namibia’s borders were recovered during the same period.
The figures were highlighted as the police prepares to mark the United Nations International Day of Police Cooperation on Monday, under the theme ‘Global police cooperation for global security’.
