Namibians are big on rally. If you harbour any doubt, make sure to get to Tony Rust Race Track for round five of the Namibian National Rally Championship, which takes place on 4 and 5 October at the Tony Rust race track.
Dubbed the spectator stage, this round of the Namibian National Rally Championships is known to draw a large crowd as it is much closer to the city than most stages.
On Wednesday 18 September, outfitters and motor spares mecca, Cymot continued to show support for local motor sport and this week sponsored the Star Bodyworks Subaru WRX Turbo 4×4 rally team of Dick Cornelissen and Melvin Gous with a cheque for N$ 100 000.
Cornelissen and Gous are among the country’s most successful rally teams and share more than 20 years of motor sport experience between them.
They race a purpose built Subaru WRX Turbo 4×4 that shreds tyre set after tyre set with its staggering 370kw. It can reach speeds of up to 200km/h within one kilometre, on the gravel! Then again, that’s what one gets when you import a proper rally car from the UK for a cool N$1 500 000.
Andre Gouws of Cymot handed over the cheque and wished the pair the best of luck in the upcoming rally stage and called for the public to come out in numbers to watch Namibia’s best drivers push their cars to the limit.
“And Cymot is the obvious choice for everything you need to be comfortable while enjoying the day watching the rally.” he said
Dick Cornellisen from Star Body works, Chairman of the Windhoek Motor Club and the Organising Committee, happily accepted the sponsorship at the Cymot flagship store in Windhoek.
He thanked Cymot for their support and promised to keep growing the sport of rallying.
“Let’s get the public involved in motor sport. The younger generation of drivers are helping to grow the sport of rally driving and this will also attract further sponsorship to the sport,” said Dick.
Staff, customers and the media got to take a close look at the car and excitedly watched as the engine roared to life and Dick shot the hot rod through the parking lot and up the street, complete with impressive backfire which left many cars in the parking lot with their alarms blaring.
The spectator friendly rally stages include tracks at the Western Bypass, Prosperita, BCI, Trustco and starts at the Tony Rust Race track at 19h00. Entrance at Tony Rust is only N$10 per person.
