Cricketer Van Rooi looks to England for career

FORMER national team cricketer Burton van Rooi intends to carve a professional career in Europe, after he held talks with English Cricket Premiership side Barnt Green recently.

The fast bowler already played at the 2003 Cricket World Cup at a tender age of 21 and also represented Namibia in two under 19 world cups in Sri Lanka and New Zealand respectively. Van Rooi confirmed to The Namibian Sport yesterday that he held talks with the club management and will be heading to England within the next few days.”The cricket season in that country will end soon so it will be of no use to go and play now.I will go and put things in order and will possibly only play next season,” he said.If he signs with Barnt Green, Van Rooi will join another national team player Gerrie Snyman, who currently plays for Walsaw Cricket Club, which also plays in the premiership.Van Rooi was the youngest member of the Namibian team at the World Cup in South Africa and his best figures are 5 wickets for 48 runs, he obtained whilst playing for his former club Transnamib.He currently plays for Oshakati Cricket Club and while with them has scored 157 runs in a match against Elnatan this season.He earlier scored 118 runs, while also playing for Transnamib two seasons ago and has taken a dozen of four wickets in single games during his career.If he joins Barnt Green, van Rooi will team-up with his former coach of the Namibian team at the 2003 World Cup, Dougie Brown.Brown also played for Scotland at this yearŽs World Cup in the West Indies.Van Rooi, who is a strong bowler, is also a fantastic fielder, while he is also competitive with the bat.Van Rooi confirmed to The Namibian Sport yesterday that he held talks with the club management and will be heading to England within the next few days.”The cricket season in that country will end soon so it will be of no use to go and play now.I will go and put things in order and will possibly only play next season,” he said.
