Some say success often comes after many failed attempts. This may just be the case with the recent Continental Fashion Pop-Up Show, held at the Kalahari Coffee and Jazz Cafe in Windhoek last Saturday.
Despite being plagued by a myriad of problems such as an ill-suited venue, a very late start and poor sound quality, the event has the potential to become a success – with the right planning.
Attendee Paul Mununga was unimpressed that the show started over three hours late and was disappointed with the set-up of the runway as well as the photographer’s behaviour.
“There was no runway for the models to walk on. They walked around the audience. This made guests very uneasy and it was difficult for people to clearly view the designs,” he said.
“The photographer was horrible. He stopped the models and even asked some to start their walk over again just so he could get the perfect shot. I was so frustrated after the event.”
Continental Fashion owner Zaharadden ‘Zee Tailor’ Abdullah says she would like to host another show in future.
“We would like to target a different crowd and improve on the mistakes. Just like other events, not everything always goes as planned,” she said.
“Despite some glitches, we had fun hosting the event and learnt a lot. For the next show, we are planning to choose the right venue, advertise to the right audience, do proper long-term planning and have more designs,” Abdullah said.
Continental Fashions creates unique African attire for both men and women.
“As a designer, I felt the need to promote African culture. I also felt that there was a great need to promote African clothing in Namibia as most people make use of Western clothes. Those interested in African wear usually import the clothes,” she said.
“I wanted to introduce outfits for special events such as weddings and birthdays. I am always eager to see more African attire in the community.”
The event saw a range of designs – such as swimwear, casual wear and evening wear – showcased in solid colours with touches of African print. There is no doubt that Continental Fashion has unique designs and this makes them stand out.
“Our African garments are unique. I urge the public to find comfort in wearing hand-made outfits,” Abdullah said.
Continental Fashion also offers fashion classes to those who wish to improve their skills and knowledge.
“We want to help better our fellow brothers and sisters. I believe this is a great way to help ourselves in the race against unemployment, which seems to be a burden on our society.”
