Coming face to face with Damara Elephants

EXPLORING ELEPHANTS … Two desert-adapted elephants seen walking along a dry river bed in the area west of Khorixas.

Gonwana Collection Namibia is adding a new adventure to its growing portfolio of immersive travel experiences with the launch of the Damaraland Elephant Explorer, a full-day guided activity to be offered at Damara Mopane Lodge, just 20km east of Khorixas.

The activity is officially bookable from 1 November.

Set amid the sweeping landscapes of Damaraland, Damara Mopane Lodge already captures the heart of travellers with its village-style charm; chalets surrounded by flourishing vegetable gardens and hauntingly cheerful scarecrows.

Now, with the new Damaraland Elephant Explorer, guests can deepen their connection to this rugged region through a guided exploration that brings them face-to-face with one of Namibia’s most remarkable natural treasures, the desert-adapted elephants.

Led by an experienced guide, the Damaraland Elephant Explorer offers more than just tracking elephants.

CURATED JOURNEY … A herd of desert-adapted Elephants wandering through the bush, west of Khorixas.
NATIONAL TREASURES … Elephants enjoying the shade of a camelthorn trees.

It’s a curated journey through Namibia’s geological and cultural mysteries, with optional stops at iconic landmarks such as Twyfelfontein’s ancient rock engravings, the Petrified Forest, Burnt Mountain, Organ Pipes, and even an authentic cultural village experience.

The guided experience includes not only expert interpretation of Damaraland’s delicate ecosystem, but also a rare insight into the balance between wildlife, culture, and conservation that defines Gondwana’s ethos.

“Every new experience we introduce is designed to tell a deeper story about Namibia,” says Gondwana sales and synergies manager Anthea Cloete.

“With the Damaraland Elephant Explorer, we want guests to witness the resilience of life in one of the country’s most dramatic landscapes and understand why protecting them matters.”

The launch reflects Gondwana Collection’s ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism, community engagement, and story-driven travel – principles that have made the brand synonymous with authentic Namibian hospitality.

From sunset views on the lodge’s hilltop deck to dinners made with produce from its own gardens, Damara Mopane Lodge continues to embody its ‘Hello neighbour’ spirit – now enriched by an experience that lets guests walk (and ride) the same paths as Namibia’s gentle desert giants.

For travellers seeking both comfort and discovery, November marks the beginning of a new chapter in Damaraland adventure.
