Champions Magic thump Angels

THE Skorpion Zinc Women’s Super League champions Tura Magic underlined their dominance in the league when they thrashed V Power Angels 12-1 on Wednesday.

Although the league will only officially be completed this coming weekend, Tura Magic are too far ahead of the chasing pack and had already clinched the league before Wednesday’s match.

Wednesday’s encounter, however, once again underlined their supremacy as they dominated proceedings, although V Power Angels were considerably weakened with only nine players on the field of play.

Tura Magic’s top goal scorer, Anna Marie Shikusho didn’t even start the match after suffering from a stomach bug, but she managed to convince their coach, Shama Guru to put her on in the second half and repaid his faith by scoring six goals.

Those six goals won her the player of the match award, while it also increased her lead at the top of the goal scorers chart to 28 goals overall, to put her seven goals ahead of second-placed Beverly Uueziua of Khomas Nampol.

Their other goals were scored by Yvonne Kooper (3), Juliana Blou (2) and Millicent Hikuam.

Besides the goal scorers, Lovisa Mulunga also had a great match on the right wing, providing numerous pin point crosses into the box that her strikers converted into goals.

Despite the scoreline, V Power Angels played quite well, especially in the first half, when the industrious Fiola Vliete managed to score a goal when she beat Magic’s keeper Mellissa Matheus to stab a loose ball into the net.

V Power Angels’ defenders Elizabeth Haufiku and captain Gwenneth Naris also did well in the first half, but they had no answers when the powerful Shikusho came on in the second half.

With only one match left to play, Magic now hold an unassailable lead at the top of the log on 47 points from 17 matches.

Khomas Nampol, who beat Omaheke Queens 8-2 in Gobabis yesterday, are now second on 40 points from 17 matches; Galz & Goals are third on 38 points from 17 matches; and V Power Angels are fourth on 30 points from 17 matches.

Iina Katutua scored five goals for Khomas Nampol in their victory against Omaheke Queens, while Meisietjie Muranda, Kamunikire Tjituka and Magdalena Paulus scored one goal each.

Erika Balzer and Lena Eises scored for Omaheke Queens, while Meisietjie Muranda won the player of the match award.

In another match yesterday, Unam Bokkies beat Girls Football Academy 1-0, with Lahya Shihepo scoring the winning goal, while Roxy Nanas of Girls Football Academy was the player of the match.

V Power Angels coach Risto Shikomba said a lot of his players had been lured away by other clubs and he refused to consider them for the match.

“I lost nine of my players who went to train with other clubs like the NDF and Ramblers, and although they haven’t signed with them, I decided that I didn’t want to use them. I was still hoping to field a full team today, but some players arrived too late for the match, including one who drove all the way from Mariental,” he said.

Tura Magic coach Shama Guru said their success was the result of hard work.

“It’s been a long season and the girls have worked very hard – we normally had two training sessions per day, starting at 06h00 in the morning, while the girls also had other responsibilities at home so its been very challenging. They fully deserve to win the title, now we will take about two weeks off and then start light training for the next season, because we need to try and maintain our consistency,” he said.

With Tura Magic including nine national players, they have been criticised from some quarters, as being too strong for the other teams, which did not produce competitive matches.

They remained unbeaten throughout the season, winning 15 and drawing two of their 17 matches to date. In the process they also scored an incredible 114 goals and conceded only two, for an average score of about 6-0 per match.

“When you are on top there will always be criticism, but if you come and see how hard the girls train, you will understand why they are doing so well. I also scouted a lot of these girls from the Football for Hope Academy when they were young, so they have grown with me over several years,” Guru said.

“Furthermore, when the league was off for a while we continued training and playing in seven a side tournaments, while the other teams relaxed, so we fully deserve our success,” he added.
