THE ‘Carnival of Flames’, a fire, dance and music extravaganza is a concert style event showcasing local talent which will take place on Sunday, 28 December in Swakopmund.
Evolve Entertainment, the organiser of the event, will collaborate with Moon Goddess Dance Studio from Windhoek, Dance Factory, Ombazu Drummers, Sonja Keil and Savannah Collins to combine dance choreographies with and without the use of props and fire flow arts with live music performances.
Says Zelda Lourens, owner of Evolve Entertainment: “This will be a first of its kind in Namibia. Our aim is to stun and mesmerise our audience by offering a visual extravaganza of flaming inspiration.”
Lourens, a practitioner of fire-spinning, started Evolve Fire Performers in 2002 but the current group was formed about two years ago.
Carnival of Flames is to become an annual event, hosting local talent and teaching these unique skills to the youth. The ‘flow arts’, as it is referred to, is a very beneficial tool and could increase self esteem, improve co-ordination, develop muscle tone, reduce stress, encourage creativity, sharpen analytical skills, cultivate patience and persistence and also balance bi-lateral motor skills.
Lourens says their aim for the future is to run fun shops at community centres and different locations in town to provide flow art skills to the youth, mainly in Swakopmund.
Visitors to the coast over the festive season can look forward to this one-night extravaganza which will take place on the large area behind Desert Explorers and SFC.
An open air stage will host seating for approximately 1000 spectators. There will be a carpeted area around the stage with pillows for children.
Food stalls will be available at the entrance, along with bar facilities and a smoking area. Gates open at 19h00.
“We are planning a carnival entrance with banners and lights. All staff and participants will be dressed up in festive attire. The seating area will be well-lit with solar lights down the aisles and we have even made additional toilet facilities available – which will be manned and cleaned regularly – for the convenience of spectators,” Lourens enthuses.
The show will be hosted by Clinton Lang from West Coast FM and will start at around 19h45.
A fireman and medic will also be on standby for the duration of the show.
