Botswana declares three days of mourning for former president Mogae

Botswana president Duma Boko has declared a three-day national mourning period to honour former president Festus Mogae, who died on Friday at the age of 86.

During the mourning period, national flags across Botswana will fly at half-mast.

In an address to the nation on Friday, Boko praised Mogae for his immense contribution to the country and described him as a leader who carried Botswana’s name with dignity across the world.

“He carried the name of Botswana with dignity across the world and remained, throughout his life, a voice of reason, unity and peace,” Boko said.

Mogae served as Botswana’s president from 1998 to 2008.

Boko said the former president served the nation with humility, dignity and dedication, adding that Botswana will forever remain grateful for his service.

“May his life and legacy continue to inspire us to build a Botswana that reflects the ideals he so faithfully upheld,” he added.

Boko also extended condolences to former first lady Barbara Mogae and the Mogae family.

He said the nation remains indebted to both Barbara and her husband for their service to the country.
