Boois corruption case postponed to August

THE corruption case against Karas Governor Dawid Boois was postponed to August 20 to fix a trial date following his brief appearance in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Boois faces 24 charges of corruption for allegedly pocketing a monthly housing subsidy of N$7 500 for a year while he was living in a council house.Boois indicated that he had enlisted the services of lawyer Sisa Namandje. He remains free on warning.Boois’s supporters staged a demonstration in front of the courthouse and rolled out a red carpet for him, but the Police ordered that it be removed. The governor’s supporters also shielded him from being photographed by a reporter for the Republikein newspaper. The Police had their hands full with a huge crowd who tried to storm into the courtroom. Only some of the people were allowed in due to limited space, while the others had to stand outside.Shortly after the case was adjourned, Boois’s supporters gathered at the town’s central park, where a statement was read by Tses Swapo branch co-ordinator Petrus Witbooi, who doubles as Tses Village Council chairman. Witbooi claimed that the corruption charges against Boois were part of a political campaign to tarnish this political credibility on the eve of this year’s regional and local authority elections.
