TEAM BLIZZ owned bragging rights as the country’s best social assemble after winning Southern Africa’s biggest one-day volleyball tournament in Windhoek on Saturday.
Again, the Windhoek Draught DTS Volleyball for All drew thousands of players and spectators to the DTS sports grounds in Olympia, with 240 participating teams ensuring the maximum capacity was reached again.
Following the first group stage in the morning, 64 teams proceeded to compete in the afternoon, with the numbers whittling down with each passing round until team Blizz defeated #woseidihr in a nerve-wrecking three-set final. Before the deciding match, they had eliminated last-year’s winners Vikings in an epic semi-final showdown. Yet, in the match for third place, Vikings again proved their class in beating FC Cerveja.
The winners received prizes from main sponsor Windhoek Draught.
Additionally, prizes were handed out to teams with the best outfit (Candy Crew), most energetic (Maliballers) and for best team spirit (Volleball Magic). Also, “next big thing” prize, awarded to the most outstanding non-volleyball player hoping to take up the sport, went to Thilo Wickens of losing finalists #woseidihr.
“A hearty thank you from DTS goes out to all organisers, helpers, referees, teams, spectators, sponsors and everybody who played a part in making this 36th Volleyball for All a huge success,” event coordinator Karin Curshmann said.
As in the past years, the tournament was also ably supported by NHP, co-sponsor since last year, and Radiowave 96.7FM as media partner.
