Black Africa on brink of Premiership title

LOG leaders Black Africa travel to Otjiwarongo to take on Mighty Gunners tomorrow in the knowledge that victory will just about secure their second successive Premier League title.

BA currently have a 12-point lead over second-placed Civics and if they win, and Civics lose against Eleven Arrows, BA will stretch their lead to 15 points. With only five rounds remaining after this weekend’s matches, the only way Civics could still catch them is if they win all their matches by large margins and hope BA don’t pick up any more points. That, however, is virtually impossible, and the way BA have been playing this season they could well create history by becoming the first team since Independence to finish the league unbeaten. They have only dropped six points all season, having won 13 and drawn three of their 16 matches to date. Mighty Gunners however will provide a stern test as their recent results show. A fortnight ago they comfortably beat Orlando Pirates 3-1 in Windhoek and last week they held Tigers to a 1-1 draw also in Windhoek. The battle to avoid relegation is picking up in intensity with three teams – Hotspurs, Eleven Arrows and United Stars – all within four points of each other at the foot of the table. Tenth-placed Hotspurs lost 2-0 to Tigers on Wednesday night, with Letu Shatimuene and Pineas Jacob scoring the goals – and could well be caught by Arrows this weekend. Arrows have improved considerably under new coach Woody Jacobs and if they manage to beat Civics in Walvis Bay tomorrow, they will move out of the bottom two places for the first time since October 15 last year. United Stars entertain Blue Waters in Rundu and they too, will be fighting for survival to get off the foot of the table. Tonight, fifth-placed African Stars take on sixth-placed Ramblers at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in a match that will not have much significance except to restore lost pride. Both teams have had disappointing seasons and according to reports, Stars’ management could well bring in former star player Oscar Mengo as technical director for under pressure coach Bobby Samaria. On Sunday, SKW take on Orlando Pirates at the SKW Stadium. Pirates have also had a disappointing run, which resulted in a shake-up of their coaching staff, shortly after their 3-1 defeat to Mighty Gunners on March 17, with coach Rusten Mogane becoming the new technical director and assistant coach Bertus Bock the new head coach. – namibiasport.com.na
