Massimo Baistrocchi presents his imagery as sacred gems, with the square format frequently paralleled by one or various frames which, as part of the design, take the viewer’s focus through different stages of a central core in which a meaningful sign or figurative form is enshrined.
Subtle drawing skills are the basis for the beauty and finesse of Baistrocchi’s art.During his time in Namibia, Massimo Baistrocchi has come to know the country’s vast open spaces and inhabitants. He is fascinated by the omnipresence of light and the forms and structures of the arid land, as well as the survival techniques adapted by human beings, animals and plants. His newest works reflect his Namibian experiences.Baistrocchi’s great love is animals. Contrary to the choice of smaller species in earlier years, in current work he is challenged by the ‘Big Five’. Bathed in an environment of bright yellow, the kings of the wilderness mark the centre of his compositions as African icons. To make the African atmosphere tangible, the artist has utilised the natural tones of rooibos tea and plant peeling.Baistrocchi was born on August 17, 1942 in Karuizawa, Japan, where his diplomat father was stationed at the time. As a child he lived in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt and France and he was Ambassador to Namibia from 2001 to 2004.
