A one-year-old baby died at Otjiwarongo after allegedly being left alone at home on Monday.
National police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says the incident took place at around 20h00.
“The infant, Monica Kondjashili, born on 10 April last year, was found on the bed wrapped in a yellow baby blanket inside a shack room at Telecom location at the town.
“It is alleged that the 25-year-old mother left the child unattended to go to a nearby shebeen. When she returned home and wanted to breastfeed, she realised the baby was dead.
“The baby was not sick, according to the mother and neighbours, and it is reported that the mother was under the influence of alcohol,” Shikwambi says.
Meanwhile, a man (28) appeared in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of robbery after he allegedly broke into a tourist’s tent on Friday.
The incident took place at Okapika campsite at Ruacana in the Omusati region.
The man allegedly stole some items after opening the tent’s padlock, gaining entry.
“He stole one Nikon camera, valued at N$2 199, a white Samsung camera F2.5 bright lens, costing N$470, one electric shaving machine charger, valued at N$270, a cabled shaving machine, valued at N$300, and a hat valued at N$150,” Omusati police crime investigations coordinator Malakia Simaho says.
In another incident, the decomposed body of a man was discovered floating in the Okavango River on Sunday.
The discovery was made at Mini Saya beach at Uvhungu-vhungu village in the Kavango East region.
Kavango East crime investigations coordinator deputy commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu has confirmed the discovery.
He says the body was found floating in an eastern direction by members of the community, who alerted the police.
“The body of the deceased was retrieved from the river with the help of community members,” Kanyetu says.
He says the man has not been identified yet, and his next of kin have not been informed of the incident.
The body was taken to Rundu Intermediate Hospital.
In another incident, a man who is employed as a security guard at NamWater dam at Omatemba village in Ruacana constituency in the Omusati region allegedly raped and impregnated a 14-year-old pupil between January and 4 June this year.
According to the crime report issued by Omusati police regional commander Ismael Basson, it is alleged that the suspect had raped the minor several times and impregnated her.
The victim is a pupil at Otjaandjamwenyo Combined School and a resident of Omatemba village.
The suspect has not been arrested yet although he is well known by the complainant.
In a separate incident, an eight-year-old boy was allegedly raped by a 15-year-old boy on 21 May at about 14h00 at Okalindi village, Oshikuku constituency.
It is alleged that the suspect had raped the minor who was alone in the house.
This happened after the suspect went to the victim’s house for a bath.
The victim is from Okalindi village and a Grade 2 pupil at Olupumbu Combined School.
The suspect is yet to be arrested.
