THE National Youth Council of Namibia (NYC) launched the 14th National Youth Week under the theme ‘Youth ignite zero-tolerance towards gender-based violence’ on Friday.
NYC chairperson Sharonice Busch officially launched the event.
Busch said the reality of sexual and gender-based violence in Namibia is undeniable. As of last year, between January to October, 3 900 cases of sexual and GBV were reported to the GBV unit.
According to Busch, the rate at which rape and other forms of sexual and GBV occur in Namibia is extremely concerning.
”Therefore, concerted and coordinated efforts are required to respond to, prevent and ultimately eliminate this form of violence that has become a serious blemish to our national conscience,” Busch said.
Busch said NYC recognises that GBV affects women and children as well as men.
“Hence, we have planned activities that focus on both genders such as Slut Night targeting GBV against women and Men’s conference to discuss related issues,” Busch said.
