THE first ever Youth Olympic Games will be held in August 2010 in Singapore and a young trampoline star from Walvis Bay will represent Namibia with the universality place in trampoline.
Michel’le Solomons was chosen by the National Olympic Committee to compete in the trampoline section of the Youth Olympic Games. The news of her selection came as a big surprise to the NGF (Namibia Gymnastics Federation) and Fanie Oosthuizen, vice president of the NGF announced this achievement at the National Championships for Woman’s and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics. Her coach, Vesko Kostin, was more than excited by this news and explained that, ‘Michel’le has deserved this chance but we should all be thankful for the hard work of her predecessors such as Carl David Rautenbach and Alicia Kruger and many others, who paved the way during international competitions in the past.’Salomons will still have to compete at the Qualifying Competition of the Youth Olympics early in March 2010 together with gymnasts in others sections of gymnastics but the universality award has secured her place of participation in the Youth Olympics.Other Namibian gymnasts who will also be participating at the Youth Olympic Qualifying Competition are Anica Profitt, Aldi Truter and two more gymnasts in the Rhythmic Gymnastics section and Marlize Oosthuizen in the Woman’s Artistic section. These gymnasts will have to either win gold or silver against the best in Africa to be able to qualify Namibia to compete at this prestigious event. www.namibiasport.com.na
