IN light of public events scheduled for Thursday, all schools in urban Windhoek will close for the day.
The closure is in response to preparations for a military procession and other official activities, including the farewell to outgoing president Nangolo Mbumba, ahead of Independence Day celebrations on Friday.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by executive director of education Sanet Steenkamp.
The education ministry said the closure is necessary due to expected traffic congestion caused by the procession, and challenges of fetching pupils from schools. The circular advises that “certain parts of streets and intersections will be closed for the military procession.”
Additionally, on 19 March, schools are asked to host a celebratory morning assembly in honour of the inauguration of the new head of state, president-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
“Pupils should be actively involved in preparing and performing during this morning assembly,” the statement reads.
