THE first phase in the construction of the Windhoek-Hosea Kutako International Airport highway is nearing completion, the Roads Authority’s chief executive officer, Conrad Lutombi has said.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, he stated that the project involves upgrading to a dual carriageway of the 44-kilometre tarred road between Windhoek and the Hosea Kutako International Airport. The expected date of completion has been set for the end of November.
Lutombi said the project, which started in January 2016, is 79% complete.
“The project is divided in two phases: phase one comprises a section from MR49 (Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue) to the extension of Sam Nujoma Drive, and phase two comprises the section between Sam Nujoma interchange and Hosea Kutako International Airport,” he explained.
They are also in the process of appointing a contractor to proceed from the end of phase one up to the Dordabis turn-off, and then the final stretch from the Dordabis turn-off to the airport. Lutombi thus urged the public to bear with the contractors as there will be noise pollution during the construction, and that Hegel Street in Academia will be closed in mid-September. Phase one of the road was constructed by China Railway Seventh Group Corporation, in a joint venture with Onamangongwa Trading Enterprises at a cost of N$800 million.
