WHS, WAP through to Momentum final

WINDHOEK High School (WHS) and Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaat Skool (WAP) progressed to the u19 Super League final of the Momentum Schools Board Trophy after exciting victories against Windhoek Gymnasium and Elnatan over the weekend.

On Friday evening WHS put up a great performance to convincingly beat the defending champions Windhoek Gymnasium 35-22, after leading 17-10 at halftime.

Both teams scored three tries, but the dependable boot of WHS’ fly half Delron Brandt proved to be the difference. He gave a great kicking display, scoring six penalties and a conversion for a personal tally of 20 points, while wing Elmarco Beukes, centre Handre Klazinga and lock Rainer Augustyn scored their tries.

For Windhoek Gymnasium full back Wiks Tromp, fly half Denzo Bruwer and lock Dylan Farmer scored tries while Tromp added two conversions and a penalty.

WHS’s victory has now put paid to Windhoek Gymnasium’s hopes of winning the Super League for the third year in a row after they beat Elnatan 33-8 for their first ever Super League title in 2014 and Tsumeb 22-19 in last year’s final.

WAP meanwhile made history after beating Elnatan 30-27 to reach their first ever u19 Super League Cup final.

Elnatan won the try count four to three, but fly half Gerswin Mouton was WAP’s hero, scoring 20 points through a try, three conversions and three penalties.

In a thrilling match that went down to the wire, WAP took a 20-15 halftime lead, but Elnatan seemed to have wrapped it up when they went 27-23 ahead in the final stages.

Mouton however had other ideas and a brilliant last minute try, when he kicked over Elnatan’s defence and collected the ball on the bounce to dive over, gave them a thrilling victory.

WAP’s other tries were scored by full back Handen Morkel and prop forward Jurgen Leigh Human.

Elnatan’s fly half PW Steenkamp also had a great match, scoring 12 points through a try, a penalty and two conversions, and impressing with his relieving touch kicks.

Elnatan’s other two tries were scored by scrum half Janneman Lamprechts, full back Juan Viljoen and left wing Nico Maartens.

WHS and WAP will contest the Momentum Boards u19 Super League final at the Hage Geingob Stadium next Saturday.
