Drivers travelling along the B1 Western Bypass in Windhoek are experiencing slower traffic due to the construction of speed humps by the Roads Authority (RA).
The RA is installing speed humps along sections of the B1 Western Bypass and the A1 road south of Windhoek.
RA says the speed humps are being installed to reduce pedestrian fatalities and improve road safety.
The speed-calming measures will be introduced between the Independence Avenue interchange near Katutura State Hospital and the Lafrenz interchange on the B1 Western Bypass, as well as along the A1 road between Prosperita and the Windhoek Country Club Resort.
Construction started on Friday.
The construction was initiated by works and transport minister Veikko Nekundi.
“The speed humps form part of an immediate road safety measure to reduce vehicle speeds, improve driver alertness and enhance pedestrian safety in these high-risk areas,” says RA chief executive Hippy Tjivikua.
Tjivikua says to accommodate the works, one lane will be closed at a time while traffic is diverted to the remaining open lane. Motorists can expect temporary disruptions and delays during the installation period.
He says warning signs and other traffic management measures will be in place to protect road users and construction workers.
“Road safety remains a shared responsibility, and the cooperation of all road users is essential to creating safer roads for everyone,” he says.
