Walvis Bay Corridor Group on high alert over DRC Ebola outbreak

The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) has urged transporters, logistics operators and all corridor users to remain vigilant following an outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a precautionary notice issued on Thursday, the corridor group called on truck drivers, clearing agents, warehouse operators, border agencies and port users to strengthen hygiene and sanitation measures to prevent possible transmission along the Walvis Bay corridors.

Stakeholders are advised to ensure the availability of handwashing facilities, sanitisers and protective equipment at workplaces, truck stops, warehouses and border posts, while drivers and operational staff are encouraged to regularly sanitise hands and avoid contact with individuals showing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding.

WBCG acting chief executive Edward Shivute said transport and trade activities along the corridors continue to operate normally, but urged the industry to remain alert and comply with health screening measures introduced by authorities.

Shivute further encouraged truck drivers to make use of WBCG roadside wellness clinics situated along transport corridors for health support and awareness services.

“The WBCG will continue working with governments, port authorities, development partners and regional stakeholders to strengthen preparedness and coordinated response measures,” he said.

Stakeholders were also encouraged to rely on official updates from the World Health Organisation and health ministries across the region
